Two kinds of foam

Open-cell vs closed-cell, in plain words

Open-cell foam is light and soft, at about R-3.6 per inch. Closed-cell foam is dense and rigid, at about R-6 per inch, and it resists air and water vapor better. Both seal air leaks where they're sprayed. R-value tells you how well insulation slows heat, so higher is better.

Unvented attics

In an unvented attic, the foam goes on the underside of the roof deck, not on the attic floor.

Custom builds

On a custom home, foam can fill walls and roof framing before drywall. We bid it with the windows and doors on one contract.

Metal buildings

Closed-cell foam is rigid and resists water vapor, so it suits metal buildings. Own one in West Chandler or the Chandler Airpark Area? Ask about it.

Existing homes

Homes from the 1980s to 2000s can get roof-deck foam as a retrofit. If a blown-in top-up fits better, we'll say so.

If SRP serves your home, its attic insulation rebate may cover up to 75% of the cost, to a $600 cap. Ask SRP whether foam counts; terms verified October 2026 at srpnet.com.

Phoenix Sky Harbor averages 21 days a year at 110°F or more. That's one station and Chandler can differ, but a roof deck here takes a lot of sun.

Each city sets its code

Arizona has no statewide energy code, so each city or county adopts its own edition of the IECC. A custom build with an unvented attic follows the edition on its Chandler permit.

Remodels and permits

Chandler's April 2026 permit manual requires a permit for remodeling work that isn't listed as exempt. If foam is part of a remodel, we check with the city's plan review staff before we spray.

Spray foam questions

Open-cell or closed-cell for my attic?

It depends on the space. Open-cell is lighter and softer. Closed-cell is denser, gives more R-value per inch and resists water vapor better. We look at your roof and attic before we suggest one.

Does SRP's rebate cover spray foam?

Ask SRP. Its attic rebate is for SRP residential customers, and SRP sets the rules on what qualifies. If your Chandler home is on APS, that rebate doesn't apply.

Can you foam a metal building in the Chandler Airpark Area?

Yes. Closed-cell suits metal buildings since it's rigid and resists water vapor. The City of Chandler permits and inspects commercial projects, and we schedule our work around that.

Can spray foam go into an existing home?

Yes. In a finished home, we can spray the underside of the roof deck to make a sealed attic. If the attic floor just needs more depth, a blown-in top-up may fit better.

How thick does the foam need to be?

That depends on the R-value you're after. Closed-cell gives about R-6 per inch and open-cell about R-3.6, so closed-cell reaches the same R-value in less depth.

Do you spray foam for builders?

Yes. Builders get a detailed foam bid within 48 hours of sending plans, and foam, batts, windows and doors can share one contract.

Does foam stop drafts?

Both foams seal air leaks where they're sprayed. They can't fix leaks they don't touch. If drafts come from old windows, see window replacement.
